1. Check for an outage
If the box above says it is not just you, or a card shows Problems or Down, wait it out. Microsoft's status page also lists which Xbox features are affected, such as sign-in, multiplayer or the store, so you can see whether yours is one of them.
2. Run the two built-in tests
Press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system → Settings → General → Network settings.
- Test network connection checks basic internet access.
- Test multiplayer connection checks what online games actually need: your NAT type, latency, packet loss and whether Teredo can connect.
Any warning shown here is the thing to fix first. The console links to Microsoft's explanation for each one.
| NAT type | Effect |
|---|---|
| Open | Can host and join any session. The goal. |
| Moderate | Can play, but may fail to join people with Moderate or Strict NAT. |
| Strict | Can only join players with Open NAT; voice chat and matchmaking often fail. |
3. Fix Moderate or Strict NAT
Turn on UPnP in the router and restart both devices. If that is not enough, forward the ports Microsoft lists for Xbox network to the console's fixed IP address:
- port 88 (UDP)
- 3074 (UDP and TCP)
- 53 (UDP and TCP)
- 80 (TCP)
- 500 (UDP)
- 3544 (UDP)
- 4500 (UDP)
For GTA Online, Rockstar also lists UDP 6672 and 61455–61458; GTA 6's own list has not been published yet. Avoid "double NAT", where a provider modem and your own router both route traffic: put the modem in bridge mode or use only one router.
4. Clear the alternate MAC address
In Network settings → Advanced settings → Alternate MAC address, choose Clear and restart. A leftover custom MAC address is a common cause of the console not getting a proper connection after a router change.
5. Full power cycle and persistent storage
The default "sleep" power mode does not reset networking. Hold the console's power button for 10 seconds until it switches off, unplug it for a minute, and restart. Restart the router at the same time.
If the game behaves oddly after an update, clear Settings → Devices & connections → Blu-ray → Persistent storage. Despite the name, it also holds cached data for installed games.
6. DNS and Wi-Fi
In Advanced settings → DNS settings → Manual, you can try a public resolver such as 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1. A wired connection or the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band reduces the packet loss that the multiplayer test reports.
7. Account, sign-in and membership
If sign-in fails, remove and re-add your profile, and check that the console's time zone and clock are set automatically. Online multiplayer on Xbox consoles generally requires a Game Pass membership that includes online play. Rockstar has not yet detailed GTA 6's online requirements.
Still stuck?
If the tests pass and others are not reporting problems, file a report. Then contact Xbox or Rockstar support with any error code shown.
