GTA 6 common launch issues and fixes

The problems players are most likely to hit around launch: pre-load, licences, downloads, storage, sign-in and crashes. Each has step-by-step fixes for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S taken from official support documentation.

GTA VI pre-load has not started

Symptoms: It is 12 November (or later) but GTA VI is not downloading, or it shows as purchased with a countdown only.

Likely causes:

  • Pre-load opens at local midnight on 12 November 2026 for digital pre-orders; before that nothing will download.
  • Physical copies are a download code in a box; the code must be redeemed before anything downloads.
  • PS5: automatic downloads are off, or the console is not set as your primary console.
  • Xbox: the game was not queued to pre-install, or you are signed in with a different account.

Fix on PS5

  1. Go to Game Library > Purchased, select the pre-order, then select the release countdown timer and follow the prompts to set up auto-download.
  2. Make sure automatic downloads are enabled and that this PS5 is the console where Console Sharing and Offline Play is on (Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play).
  3. If you bought the boxed version, redeem the code on PlayStation Store first.

Fix on Xbox

  1. Pre-ordered digital games can be pre-installed from the Microsoft Store listing; see Xbox's pre-order FAQ.
  2. Confirm you are signed in with the Microsoft account that holds the pre-order; if you bought a boxed copy, redeem the code first.

GTA VI is installed but will not start before launch

Symptoms: The game is fully downloaded but shows a countdown or will not open.

Likely causes:

  • The game launches on 19 November 2026; pre-loaded data stays locked until the store unlocks it in your region.
  • Rockstar has not published a per-region unlock schedule; press reports describe local-midnight unlocks rolling across time zones.

Fix on PS5

  1. Leave the console connected so the licence can activate when the unlock time arrives; check the countdown on the game in Game Library.

Fix on Xbox

  1. Leave the console online and signed in with the purchasing account at unlock time.

Game will not launch or hangs on start

Symptoms: GTA VI shows an error when launching, hangs on a black/loading screen, or returns to the home screen.

Likely causes:

  • Game or system software out of date.
  • Corrupted game data.
  • Temporary platform service problem during licence checks.

Fix on PS5

  1. Check for a game update: Game Library > highlight the game > Check for Update.
  2. Update the PS5 system software.
  3. If an error code such as CE-100095-5, CE-100096-6 or CE-108255-1 appears, delete the game from Settings > Storage and reinstall it.
  4. Boot into Safe Mode and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database.

Fix on Xbox

  1. If you see 0x87e5002b, install the latest console update.
  2. If you see 0x8027025a, check Xbox status, then quit the app (Xbox button > Home > highlight the tile > Menu > Quit) and relaunch after 10 seconds.
  3. Restart the console and try again.

Game crashes during play

Symptoms: GTA VI closes with an error mid-session.

Likely causes:

  • Software error in the game or system software.
  • Corrupted installation.

Fix on PS5

  1. Install any available game patch and the latest system software.
  2. Delete and reinstall the game (Settings > Storage).
  3. Safe Mode > Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database.
  4. Last resort: Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options (back up saves first).

Fix on Xbox

  1. Install the latest console update.
  2. Restart the console; if the crash repeats, look up the error code on Xbox Support's error search.

Cannot connect to PlayStation Network / Xbox network

Symptoms: Connection or time-out errors when the game or console tries to reach online services.

Likely causes:

  • Platform outage or heavy load (common at big launches).
  • Home network problem (router, Wi-Fi range).
  • Note: GTA VI is described as a single-player experience at launch, so no Rockstar multiplayer servers are involved yet; connection errors at launch will usually be platform or network issues.

Fix on PS5

  1. Check the PlayStation status page first.
  2. For NW-102636-8: turn the modem/router off for more than five minutes, then restart it; on Wi-Fi move the PS5 closer to the router.
  3. For NW-102216-2: check whether other devices connect, and try a wired connection.

Fix on Xbox

  1. Check Xbox status first.
  2. For 0x80832003 (temporary Xbox network problem) wait and retry; restart the console.
  3. For 0x80a40019 check your network connection.

Cannot sign in to your PlayStation or Xbox account

Symptoms: Sign-in fails, or the console says access is prohibited or unavailable.

Likely causes:

  • Service outage around the time of sign-in.
  • Account restriction or suspension.
  • Billing details problem (Xbox).

Fix on PS5

  1. For WS-116332-6: check PSN status; it can be temporary congestion, so retry later. It can also mean the account/console is restricted.

Fix on Xbox

  1. For 0x87DD0006: check Xbox status and wait out any outage; review billing info; restart console and router.
  2. For 0x8027025a: check Xbox status, quit and relaunch the app, restart the console.

Console or game update required

Symptoms: The game refuses to launch until an update is installed, or the update itself fails.

Likely causes:

  • System software older than the game requires.
  • Update server busy or network interruption.

Fix on PS5

  1. For NP-102944-0 / NP-102945-1: update system software over the internet; if that fails, restart network gear and console, or update via USB with a file downloaded on a computer.
  2. For CE-100002-3 (game update failed): restart and retry.

Fix on Xbox

  1. For 0x87e5002b: install the latest console update.
  2. For 0x8B050033: the update could not complete; try again a little later.

Not enough storage space

Symptoms: Download or pre-load will not start, or fails with a storage error.

Likely causes:

  • Rockstar has not announced GTA VI's file size, so the space needed is unknown until the store listing shows it.
  • PS5 installs can temporarily need about twice the space of the data.

Fix on PS5

  1. Check Settings > Storage and delete what you do not need.
  2. CE-107872-5 / CE-100028-1 mean insufficient space; free space or install to extended storage.

Fix on Xbox

  1. Free space via the console's storage management before pre-load opens; check the Microsoft Store listing for the size when published.

External or expansion storage not recognised

Symptoms: The console cannot see the drive the game is installed on.

Likely causes:

  • Drive disconnected or unsupported.

Fix on PS5

  1. CE-100006-7: reconnect the drive; see Sony's page for supported devices.

Fix on Xbox

  1. Reconnect the storage device and restart the console.

Download is slow, paused or failing

Symptoms: Pre-load or the day-one download crawls, pauses, or errors out.

Likely causes:

  • Very high demand on store/content delivery at launch.
  • Wi-Fi interference or router problems.
  • Service alerts on the platform.

Fix on PS5

  1. Follow Sony's download troubleshooting guide.
  2. For CE-107891-6: delete the partial download, restart the PS5, and download again.
  3. For time-outs (NW-102636-8): restart the router after leaving it off five minutes; move closer to Wi-Fi or use a cable.

Fix on Xbox

  1. For 0x87e00017 (download failed/paused due to networking or a service alert): check Xbox status, restart the console, resume the download.

Game says you do not own it / licence check fails

Symptoms: After pre-loading, the game asks you to buy it or cannot verify ownership.

Likely causes:

  • Signed in with the wrong account.
  • Console is not your primary PS5 / home Xbox and you are offline.
  • Temporary licensing service problem.

Fix on PS5

  1. Sign in with the account that bought the game.
  2. Enable Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play on your main PS5 (only one console at a time).

Fix on Xbox

  1. For 0x803F8001: sign in with the purchasing account and make sure you are online.
  2. Set your main console as your home Xbox (Make this my home Xbox) so your digital games work offline; you can change the home Xbox up to five times per year.
  3. For 0x87E10BC6: check Xbox status and retry later.

Boxed copy has no disc

Symptoms: You bought a physical GTA VI box and there is no disc inside.

Likely causes:

  • Rockstar confirmed boxed copies contain only a download code; no disc is included at launch.

Fix on PS5

  1. Redeem the code on PlayStation Store as soon as you have it, then download/pre-load; an internet connection is required.

Fix on Xbox

  1. Redeem the code in the Microsoft Store, then install; an internet connection is required.

No online/multiplayer option in GTA VI

Symptoms: Players cannot find an online mode.

Likely causes:

  • GTA VI is described officially as a single-player experience at launch; no online mode, name or date has been announced.

Likely causes:

  • The account or console may be restricted for a terms-of-service violation, or access may be temporarily unavailable.

Symptoms: Some Xbox services report they are unavailable for your account.

Likely causes:

  • Microsoft notes some Xbox services are not available in every region.

Fix on PS5

  1. Check that your PlayStation account region matches the store where you bought the game; PlayStation account regions cannot be changed.
