GTA 6 pre-load and download

Pre-load opens at local midnight on 12 November 2026, a week before the 19 November launch, for digital pre-orders and for redeemed boxed-copy codes[1][2][3]. The download size has not been announced (checked 6 October 2026), so the best thing to do now is make room and set your console up to download on its own.

What is officially known

Last checked 6 October 2026. We update this page when Rockstar, PlayStation or Xbox publish the size or anything new about pre-loading. For the launch time itself, see what time GTA 6 unlocks.

Get ready now: your console checklist

All of this can be done today, before the size is known. It is the same whether you pre-order digitally or redeem a boxed copy's code.

PlayStation 5

  1. Make room on the internal SSD (or a supported M.2 drive). The size is not announced, so leave plenty of space. Delete or move games you are not playing in Settings > Storage. On PS5, an install can need extra free space while it unpacks.
  2. Turn on automatic downloads and updates. Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates: switch on Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
  3. Let it download in Rest Mode. Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode: keep Stay Connected to the Internet on.
  4. Make this your main console. Turn on Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 you play on, so the game can start even if sign-in services are busy.
  5. Check your connection and sign-in. Run Test Internet Connection in Settings > Network, and sign in once with the account that holds the pre-order.

Xbox Series X|S

  1. Make room on the internal SSD (or a Storage Expansion Card). The size is not announced, so leave plenty of space. Games for Xbox Series X|S must run from the internal drive or an expansion card.
  2. Keep the console and games up to date. Settings > System > Updates: turn on keeping your console and games up to date.
  3. Choose the Sleep power mode. Settings > General > Power options: Sleep lets downloads and updates continue while the console is off.
  4. Make this your home Xbox. Settings > General > Personalisation > My home Xbox, so the game can start for your account on this console.
  5. Check your connection and sign-in. Settings > General > Network settings: Test network connection, then sign in with the account that holds the pre-order.

PC

No PC version has been announced, so there is nothing to pre-load on PC. Our PC page tracks what is known.

How pre-loading works

Pre-loading means downloading the game before launch so it is ready the moment it unlocks. From 12 November your console downloads GTA 6 in the background if the pre-order is on that account (or the boxed code is redeemed) and automatic downloads are on. The game stays locked until launch day. On launch day there may still be an update to download, so leave the console connected.

If the pre-load does not start

Check that the pre-order is on the account you are signed in with, that automatic downloads are on, and that there is enough free space; boxed copies need their code redeemed first. Our pre-load fix has the full steps for both consoles, and the launch checklist tracks everything you have done.

Questions

When does GTA 6 pre-load start?

At local midnight on 12 November 2026, one week before launch, for digital pre-orders and for boxed copies once their download code is redeemed.

How big is the GTA 6 download?

Rockstar, PlayStation and Xbox have not published a size yet (checked 6 October 2026). Any figure you see elsewhere is a guess. Free up as much space as you can now, and check the store listing, which shows the size once it is set.

Do boxed copies of GTA 6 have a disc?

No. Rockstar says the physical version holds a download code, and it goes on sale on 12 November 2026 so it can be pre-loaded once the code is redeemed.

Is there a PC version to pre-load?

No PC version has been announced. GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. See our PC page for what is known.
